What are flies?

True flies make up one of the largest groups of insects. They are persistent pests that won’t leave us alone, no matter how much we swat and slap at them. Unlike most insects with two pairs of wings, flies only have one pair of membranous wings; they also have large eyes and short antennae. Flies reproduce at a very high rate, making controlling them difficult. Are flies dangerous?

Flies are a health risk and, therefore, not welcome in our homes. Flies are poor fliers, which means they take off and frequently land, allowing the spread of bacteria and diseases they carry on their bodies and legs. When flies get into our homes, they land, feed, and breed on the food we have stored, spreading things like salmonellosis, dysentery, and other diseases that cause vomiting and diarrhea.

Some flies also like to overwinter indoors and find a way into attics or other warm sunny areas of a home to spend the cold winter months.

Where will I find flies?

You will find flies are most problematic when the weather is warm and optimal for fly eggs to develop into adults. Our yards often provide flies with many of the things they need to survive like gardens, trash cans, compost piles, pet excrement, standing water, and decaying vegetation.

If flies live, especially in large populations, close to our homes, they eventually find their way inside. Just opening the door to walk in or out of your home (a necessary task) can create a space that allows flies inside.
